Award of Excellence to Coolon for Ibys LED highbay Award of Commendation to Jan Flook for Queen Victoria Markets pendant Designers Jan Flook and Ian Dryden (Melbourne City Council) The concept The final design was based on the premise that not only did the fixture have to provide sufficient light for the interior but also had to liberate the ceiling cavity from the multiple services suspended from the roof. The luminaire also integrates the public announcement and piped music speaker system, up lighting for the heritage roof and Spitfire emergency lighting currently not in existence. 80W warm white dimmable LED panels with PE cells were selected for maintenance cycle reduction and energy efficiency optimisation. The ceiling was up lit with 3x 7W focusable LED spots, softening shadows in the dark ceiling and exposing the period detail. The need to clean bugs out was addressed by making large vents on the base. Judges’ comments The design team of the Queen Victoria Pendant have created a fitting of timeless style. Considerable ingenuity was shown to integrate multiple services into the luminaire, to reduce ceiling clutter. The result is an iconic, uniquely Melbourne design that I’m sure we’ll see popping up in locations all over the city. The timeless but modern Queen Victoria Markets pendant. Award of Commendation to Klik Systems for AEB Pendant Designer Dean Philips, Darkon The concept The Giant Ambient rings were commissioned for Smithfield RSL in NSW early in 2014. The request was for overlapping, large diameter rings with various wattage LEDs all controlled by Dali dimming control gear. The largest ring, 6.9 m in diameter, was supplied in quarters. Two 3m diameter rings were supplied in halves while the three 2m rings were supplied in one piece. The main body uses rolled aluminium angle with an extruded opal lens that clips into place. The decorative outer body is made of anodized flat bar and rolled to fit the inner body, using Velcro. A buckle was used to connect the rings on site, to pull all joints completely shut after the fittings were suspended. Judges’ comments The designers were faced with significant logistical difficulties and assembly constraints when delivering a 6.9 metre diameter pendant from Melbourne to Sydney. The resulting luminaire is scalable, flexible and most importantly affordable. The fitting shows an intimate appreciation of the installation requirements not to be forgotten once it’s out the factory door. Designers Alexandre Zatsepin and Stan van der Merwe The concept The Ibys is Coolon’s latest product designed and manufactured in Australia using the highest quality components. It was designed as the most efficient solution for direct replacement of most HID highbays of up to 250W. It consumes only 158W for an output of 15,880 – 17,600lm. This LED luminaire is expected to provide a useful life of over 50,000 hours with 70% residual light output. It’s incredibly sleek, yet robust design allows it to be used in a wide variety of applications, ranging from heavy industrial facilities through to retail stores, stadiums and public spaces. Judges’ comments The creators of the Ibys have shown how to design from first principles. They responded to specific requirements and expertly utilised cutting edge technology to produce a highbay unlike any conventional fitting on the market. The concept The Klik Systems AEB Pendant is a bespoke luminaire developed solely for use in Queensland University’s Advanced Engineering Building. Klik Systems Qld were engaged to design and manufacture 12 bespoke fittings for what is to be the centre piece of this project, the state-of-the-art GHD Auditorium – a 500 seat lecture theatre supported by large-span timber trusses from mixed hardwoods. This is the largest auditorium at the UQ and the most visible feature of this building. The ultimate brief was for twelve large scale triangular prism pendants to give vertical and horizontal illumination: the triangular shape working aesthetically with the triangular nature of the ceiling trusses. T5 lamps were to be used to give vertical illumination to accentuate the detail of the ceiling and provide ambient light with no lamp imaging visible, and narrow beam “Dark Lighter” LED down lights, down clustered to achieve 320 lux at the task level and 2W/m2/100 lux. The pendant needed to incorporate emergency lighting and to house a motorised hoist to enable the pendant to be lowered for maintenance. The whole lighting system needed to be DALI controlled, have good thermal performance and be easy to clean, and be built to fall within weight and budget limitations. Judges’ comments The AEB pendant very adequately fulfils the reading, writing and emergency lighting requirements of Queensland University’s Advanced Engineering Building 500 seat auditorium, while providing a general lighting amenity to the space. This general lighting enhances and highlights the complex and inspiring exposed timber roof trusses which define the ceiling. The judges congratulate Klik Systems and their associates in the development of this bespoke luminaire and for the quality of the lighting this luminaire brings to the auditorium architecture and space.
