Lighting : Lighting August 2014 - Vol34 Issue 4

44 LIGHTING MAGAZINE | August/September 2014 experiments the wall luminance varied between 11 and 75 cd/m2. The results showed that 40 cd/m2 is the most comfortable wall luminance and by choosing these values you can virtually eliminate the requirements for the horizontal illuminance of the surroundings. The maximum vertical luminance was deliberately set at 75 cd/m2 because the researchers did not want to include biologically effective illumination in this study. Fredeico Favero’s paper Natural Experiment of the Impact of Artificial Lighting at Day lighting on Quantitative and Qualitative Parameters reported on a study conducted in two classrooms at the Art Academy in Stockholm where they blinded the windows in one study room and only had electric light and left the other study room unchanged with normal access of daylight. They monitored the subjects’ physical activity (how much they were moving in the space) as well as their sleep, mood and energy level. There was surprisingly little physical activity in space without daylight. The subjects in the room without daylight moved only 1/3 of those who stayed in the daylit room. The other parameters also varied but not nearly as much as the physical activity level. I cannot hide my admiration for American George Brainard; he is a great speaker and has a lot on his heart. His lecture, Exploring the Power of Light: From Photons to Human Health was, as always, dazzling. “We no longer have to waste time discussing whether light affects us physically. We know that between 60 and 80% of patients receiving light therapy respond to treatment. We really don’t have to discuss whether we who are working with lighting design also affect the end users’ biological state – we do, because light affects us physically, whether we want it or not! What we need are standards in the field.” A lot has happened since my first CIE conference in India almost 20 years ago. We have, thankfully, moved from light for technical standards’ sake, towards lighting for people. We know that light affects us in many ways: visually, emotionally and biologically. We are now working with light sources that did not exist a few years ago and there are many, many things that need to be explored and new standards need to be develop. Best yet, the conference title underlines that we no longer need to discuss whether we want quality of light or energy saving – we want light quality and energy savings! ABouT THE AuTHoR Henrik Clausen BEng, MIDA, MIESNA, has been involved in lighting for over 26 years in both commercial and academic positions. Henrik helped to pioneer the use of lighting application software to aid custom manufacturing of luminaires, always working closely with architects interior designers, and specialist lighting designers. In 1996 he became the Managing Director of Fagerhult Lighting in Denmark, and held that position until 2004, where he founded the Fagerhult Lighting Academy responsible for research and education, based in Copenhagen. Since 2011Henrik has been Fagerhult’s Director of international business development. Henrik is a frequent guest lecturer at various universities. He also appears world-wide as a guest speaker on many different occasions, primarily addressing the human and emotional aspects of light and lighting design. He has been a member of the board in the Danish Illuminating Engineering Society and is a member of the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America. His goal is to act as a catalyst in the cooperation between engineers, designers and architects in ensuring the optimum lighting solution is found. Eagle Lighting Australia, a member of the Fagerhult group, has confirmed that Henrik Clausen will visit Australia and New Zealand this September. A number of educational and technical workshops are planned for most major cities where Henrik will address and explore the human and emotional aspects of light and lighting design. He will also chair a number of Creative Lab sessions, designed to explore what can be achieved in lighting. Visual comfort and the positive effects of ambient light on our well-being has long been the cornerstone of Fagerhult’s business. Henrik will discuss the ongoing studies into how lighting affects learning in schools.
