Take a Second Look is all about raising public awareness for Kiwi kids living with arthritis. Kevin Cawley, lighting designer, teamed up with Bayley LuuTomes, award winning landscape designer with two identical gardens side-by -side with playground equipment in them both: one that kids with arthritis could use and the other they could not. The gardens tell the story of an 11-year old girl called Alisha; one of over a thousand New Zealand kids living with arthritis. A garden of two halves, one illustrating the good days when she looks like any other kid playing in the playground; swinging on the swing, sliding down the slide and hanging around on her monkey bars – things that help keep her joints flexible and mobile. But when the arthritis takes grip everything changes. Take a Second Look illustrates how on these days the playground becomes an obstacle course – the simplest things become impossible challenges; gripping becomes painful and frustrating. Both gardens were lit using LEDs indirectly. In order to create and tell the story between the two he used theatrical gels with concealed floods. All the lighting was hidden so it was only the stunning effects that were visible. An apricot gel on a 3000K LED created one garden’s atmosphere while steel blue on a 4000K LED was used for the other. – Kevin Cawley The contrasting gardens at night.
