Lighting : Whos Who of Lighting 2008
Contents
12 Who’s Who of Lighting April 2008 On February 14th 2008 a Strategic Directions meeting was held between three representatives of the IESANZ led by President Roy Speed and three representatives from Lighting Council Australia led by Chairman Russell Loane. This meeting was called to look at ways the two organisations could work together to advance the interests of lighting. The meeting was significant in that it brought together the two organisations that between them represent the interests of lighting in Australia. As an outcome from the meeting a Lighting Industry Strategic Directions Committee is to be formed, empowered to make decisions in a timely manner on behalf of the industry. Some of the issues discussed at the Strategic Directions meeting were as follows: • Lighting Training- Lighting Council Australia felt there was an unmet demand for lighting training at a level suited to groups such as Electrical Contractors, Wholesalers and Lighting Retailers. It was proposed that the IESANZ set up and administer an appropriate level course similar to one offered by the Lighting Industry Federation (UK). The course would be presented in a number of centres and would consist of a mix of lectures and distance learning. It would be commercial in nature and would run over several weeks. The course would be adequate, as a stand alone, for many of the intended participants and would also be good preparation for those who may be encouraged to advance to the full IESANZ Education Programmes run by the existing providers. • Interaction with Government on inefficient lamp phase-out was discussed, particularly with respect to public education. Decisions will be made on policy matters by the Lighting Industry Strategic Directions Committee and communications to Government will be channeled through the Lighting Council CEO\IESANZ Company Secretary Bryan Douglas. The Strategic Directions Committee is to seek an early meeting with the Environment Department to offer to drive a phase-out Education programme. A scoping paper is to be prepared for this committee to sign off. In New Zealand IESANZ and Lighting Council New Zealand are to be invited to replicate the Strategic Directions model. • Discussion took place about Lighting Magazine, there being a feeling that its circulation is not reaching all lighting industry stakeholders and that there is a lack of industry input. The IESANZ is to conduct a review of Lighting Magazine and refer back to the Strategic Directions Committee for further consideration. • The IESANZ sought Lighting Council Australia support for the 2008 Convention to be held in Queenstown New Zealand. It was proposed that the Convention is an event for all the Lighting Industry and needs overall support. Difficulties were seen in running significant trade shows in smaller centres and these trade shows were thought to be more likely to succeed in the two main centres of Sydney and Melbourne, perhaps on a biennial basis. London’s ARC, which focuses on quality lighting, was suggested as a model. • Drafting of Standards was discussed. The Lighting Council proposed that an industry voice was required. In the past IESANZ have nominated representatives to Standards Committees and then some times left them to promote their personal views Lighting Council requires its Standards representatives to agree to promote an agreed Council position before they can be appointed. It is proposed that the IESANZ should do the same with directions coming from the Technical Committees. • Lighting Council proposed that corporate membership of the IESANZ be based on one membership and a single invoice. • To communicate the new relationship between Lighting Council and IESANZ, Bryan Douglas is to draft a communication to members of both organizations on the formation of the Lighting Industry Strategic Directions Committee together with a media release. The Board welcomes the initiatives from the Strategic Directions meeting and recognizes them as setting very positive directions for the future of the Society. The IESANZ submission to the Equipment Energy Efficiency Committee (E3), reported in the February issue of Lighting, included an offer to work with the E3 Committee in terms of providing educational programmes to assist in the phasing-out of inefficient lamps. A joint approach through the Lighting Industry Strategic Directions Committee will add strength to this proposal and assist in having it accepted. 2008 Convention Planning for the 2008 IESANZ Convention in Queenstown, New Zealand is advancing well. Preliminary details, together with the Registration forms can be seen on the IESANZ website at (www. iesanz.org). Check it out. This promises to be a great event in one of the world’s top tourist destinations. preSiDent’S meSSage Strategic DirectionS Roy Speed
