Lighting : April May 2011
66 LIGHTING MAGAZINE | April/May 2011 Queensland Lighting Design Awards 2010 AwARDS The Bowen Foreshore project is located at the Top of the Whitsundays, along the tropical Coral Sea coast off the Bruce Highway in Northern Queensland. The redevelopment of the Bowen foreshore was aimed at creating a world-class vibrant precinct within the Bowen district. In the development of this facility, there was a need to create a nighttime experience, which, whilst addressing issues of safety and function, provided an amenity enhancement to assist in the realisation of the full investment value of the works. The built environment determines the daytime success of the project but it is the built environment and the lighting that determines the night-time success of the project. The Bowen Award of Commendation to James sparks of Design stage for Bowen Foreshore, Bowen foreshore is now the focal point of the Bowen Shire for both residents and visitors alike. The lighting was designed to reduce glare to a minimum, ensuring that the effect of the lighting provided is maximised, and not compromised by obtrusive light spilling from light fittings. In addition to the lighting design representing creative and imaginative use of light, the design also supports the operational requirements of the precinct. Lighting is connected to and controlled by an astronomical time clock and PE cell. This allows for control of individual groups of lights to be controlled as required e.g. BBQ lights turn of a midnight. This control is automatic, with manual override available as required.
