Lighting : LIGHTING Aug-Sep 2018
22 LIGHTING MAGAZINE | August/September 2018 August/September 2018 | LIGHTING MAGAZINE 23 FEATURE A conversation with Mike Sparrow Zealand (IESANZ) and his professional membership of the International Association of Lighting Designers (IALD). He says that Lend Lease has been very good to him, putting him on sick leave since February this year and, for example by putting him in the Sofitel (whose façade was one of his recent jobs) so that he could enjoy Vivid Sydney. When I asked him whether he was optimistic about lighting’s future he cited Vivid saying that he thinks that it is great saying that “many clients like it because, through Vivid, lighting is appreciated as an art form rather than (just) a utilitarian service.” Mike also had good words to say regarding the IESANZ: he believes that it is doing a good job with regular technical meetings and especially, the Meritorious Lighting Awards programs, held annually in most chapters. He said the awards were very good for the lighting industry – not only for designers but for all involved in the provision of lighting services. WARREN JULIAN Manypeopleinthelightingindustry, inits broadest sense, know Mike Sparrow and have known him for a long time. Some readers will know that earlier this year Mike became aware that he was suffering from motor neurone disease. The disease has increasingly limited his workload and stamina. Mike has been one of the most active and dedicated people in the profession with over fifty years’ experience, many of which have been with Lend Lease, where he is now Senior Design Engineer – Lighting. Mike is an electrical engineer by education but admits to being a frustrated architect. He loves the contribution that lighting can make to architecture, especially in revealing its form and texture. He is proud that he was the first person, globally, to be registered as a Certified Lighting Designer (CLD) and the first person in NSW to be a Registered Lighting Practitioner (RLP) as well as his membership of the Illuminating Engineering Society of Australia and New Mike was awarded many NSW Chapter Meritorious Lighting Awards for Penrith Plaza external lighting, Bankstown Square ‘City Limits’, Neo Pharaoh Nightclub, Australia Square, Level 45 fitout, Erina Sopping Centre Challenger fitout, Aurora Place Lobby, Castle Towers Shopping Centre, 30 The Bond Atrium, 30 The Bond Level 4 Reception, Penrith Plaza new extension, Darling Park 3, Rouse Hill Town Centre, Darling Quarter Precinct landscape lighting, Darling Quarter façade, ICC public realm lighting, ICC Exhibition Centre pre-function and façade lighting, and the Sofitel Hotel Darling Harbour façade lighting.
