64 LIGHTING MAGAZINE | December 2017/January 2018 December 2017/January 2018 | LIGHTING MAGAZINE 65 2017 IESANZ NSW LIGHTING SCULPTURE AND INSTALLATION AWARDS Award of Excellence to Claudio Porras Barajas with Carolina Cruz G for Spreading Life, Vivid Light 2017 Designers’ statement: Our main objective was to achieve the interaction of people with the Light Art Work simulating the effect by blowing a dandelion and see how its seeds are spread through the air. People can interact through two sensors on the two small dandelions that are on the main control box. When approaching anyone and blowing, immediately activate in the large dandelions a bright animation with a sound that simulates the spread of seeds by changing the color and turning on the seeds that are separated. Judges’ comments: Spreading Life was a well-constructed work of elegant yet robust construction. It enchanted with its whimsical interactive dandelion bloom. As well as being a beautiful light artwork at night it was also an appropriately sculptural creation during the day settling well within the gardens environment. Award of Excellence to the Beam Collective (Bettina Easton, Colin Shum, Grace Tham and Ales Vasenda) for Under My Umbrella, Vivid Light 2017 Designer’s statement: Under My Umbrella (UMU) invites you to dream under a glowing canopy as it sways gently in the wind. The canopy is made up of a mass of magical umbrellas that dim and glow as you dance beneath them. Suspended by wire to allow the umbrellas to dance in the wind and play with the rain. Spaced to allow both the rain and daylight to filter through the canopy, giving the installation a beauty and elegance of a delicate charm and artistry during the day that comes alive at night. UMU is the first Vivid sculpture to allow punters to download an app to control all or part of the installation. We understand that this sometimes creates noise, so we programmed an over-ride of 2 seconds. We are amazed at how many people downloaded the app and worked out control, with a smile on their face they experience a personal interaction. UMU has a simple message: “Come join us and dance the night away Under My Umbrella!” Judges’ comments: Under My Umbrella was a highly interactive work with an elegant simplicity belying its complexity. The installation’s two layers of light and mobile device interactivity fascinated all and attracted many visitors and photographers who also used it as a backdrop for selfies and fashion photos.
