16 LIGHTING MAGAZINE | December 2017/January 2018 December 2017/January 2018 | LIGHTING MAGAZINE 17 Award of Excellence to Lighting Design Partnership for Canberra Airport International Arrivals and Departures, Canberra Designer’s statement: The primary design objective is to create exceptional departure and arrival experiences for the passengers, extending the contemporary minimalist language of the airport. The client desired a ‘First Class’ experience for all passengers and these points of arrival and departure required a subliminal ‘high-quality’ feel to meet the objective. The visual experience is designed to be calming and gently rhythmic, with warm highlights at eye-level. Judges’ comments: An elegantly simple design that clearly understood and expressed through light the interior architectural imperatives without bringing attention to itself while succinctly responding to the brief of bringing a first-class lounge experience to the everyday traveller. Luminaire suppliers: Barrisol, Klik Systems, Light Culture and XAL Award of Excellence to Steensen Varming for Indigo Slam, Chippendale Designer’s statement: A piece of sculpture to be lived in, this exciting project fronts newly-built Central Park in Sydney’s Chippendale and creates an inspiring residence for an art collector. Behind a façade of sculpted concrete, serene living spaces and monumental halls create a dynamic spatial interplay of spare interiors in which the main decorative element is light. The spatial sequence is alive to the changes wrought by natural light during the day and is redefined at night as a dramatic counterpoint. Judges’ comments: The judges were intrigued and impressed with the seamless lighting integration into the architecture. Beautiful highlighting and wall washing complimented the interior objects and the architectural forms. An impressive home with impressive illumination. Luminaire suppliers: Bega, Kreon, Led Linear, Lumascape, Nimbus, Sill, Simes, SORAA and WE-EF Canberra International Airport circulation space. Indigo Slam foyer.
