Award of Commendation to James Wallace, Lightplan, for Redevelopment of Forrest Place Award of Commendation to Kim Bianchini, Andreea Puiu and Brett Metcalf, Gerard Professional Solutions for Hands Oval Award of Commendation to Michael Matrakis and Peter Mizza, Wood & Grieve Engineers for NIB Stadium Award of Excellence to Engineering Technology Consultants/ETC Light for All Saints’ College – Performing Arts Centre Internal Foyer and Auditorium The concept The lighting brief was to merge each of the lighting systems so as to provide an overall cohesive and meaningful play of light across the central area of the public open space. Judges’ comments A new project is always going to be easier to engineer than a refurbishment, but the energy conservation achievements attained in this new design are outstanding by any standards. This is particularly so as the building is required to cope with a very wide range of every day functions. Client City of Perth Luminaire Suppliers DTS, Philips Dynalite, Enttec, Simes Consulting Engineer Aecom The concept The sports lighting provided illumination for several different modes of usage (AFL match professional competition, AFL match practice and ball and physical training). The floodlights chosen had to exhibit a high degree of control of glare and waste light to minimize visual problems for the players, spectators and the surrounding environment. Judges’ comments Oval lighting is always fraught with challenges on visual pollution by day, light pollution by night, cost limitations and demands for better and better quality lighting conditions. This installation has met them all and within budget with the application of proven technologies in the light source and materials selected. The concept of three different choices of light levels gives this field an edge above others. Client City of Bunbury Luminaire Suppliers Siteco, Gerard Professional Solutions Consulting Engineer Lighting Specialists Australia The concept The key architectural element of the NIB redevelopment was the new Eastern Grandstand. Able to be clearly seen as you make your way to the stadium, providing an impressive visual display was important. Furthermore, being able to customise the look of the stadium to match the home team colours or performing artist’s requirements was needed. This was achieved through the use of linear fluorescent lighting to the glass panelling at the top of the stand to provide a “glowing” effect and colour changing LEDs to the back of the stand to wash colour to the underside of the stand’s roof and brass mesh. Judges’ comments A creative response to a variety of different visual challenges that have been met with solutions that have added further dimensions to the finished project. Client Department of Sport and Recreation Luminaire Supplier iGuzzini The concept From the very early concept meetings, the aesthetic and performance requirements of the lighting were identified as key objectives. The lighting needed to communicate simplicity, elegance and well-integrated designs, as these factors reinforced the architectural language and environmental design principals of the new Performing Arts Centre. The lighting also needed to convey the function of the building as well as providing adequate illumination. The concepts developed by ETC addressed the three main qualitative criteria being; ambient, accent and scenic light, to deliver a truly unique and visually balanced solution. Judges’ comments An excellent range of solutions to a wide range of challenges – aesthetics, ambience, technical requirement, safety and ease of use. The imagery does not do the installation justice. A creative response to a variety of different visual challenges that have been met with solutions that have added further dimensions to the finished project.
